The Golden Horn

We went out tonight in Beyoglu (or Taksim), on the other side of the Golden Horn, where young Istanbulites play, eat, drink and shop. Awesome.

The Bosphorus splits Istanbul into two sides, one Asian and the other European, whereas the Golden Horn, which spawns from the Bosphorus, separates Istanbul's European side into two. Confusing but you get a hang of it pretty quick.

Anyway, we walked across the Galata Bridge (over the Golden Horn) and were immediately swept into the REAL Istanbul, not the one we're fed in the old quarters of Sultanhamet. People fishing off the Bridge and selling their catches, men holding baskets on their heads filled with pastries or fruit, smells, sights & sounds I can't quite describe.

Istanbul is bustling but, despite its 12 million inhabitants, it's still just a large village in many respects. Let's hope it stays that way.
